MFT Engineers Go the Distance for Good Causes
This September, two of Made for Trade’s engineering team are swapping precision tools for running shoes as they take on one of the UK’s most iconic half-marathons, the Great North Run.
Gavin Herdman, Head of Engineering, and Harley Bidwell, Design Engineer, will cover the 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields, raising money for charities close to their hearts.
From Deadlines to Finish Lines
When they’re not pushing boundaries in fenestration design, Gavin and Harley are usually found in the design office, Gavin leading the development of MFT’s new Internal Glass Partition system, and Harley recently instrumental in launching the Flat Lite Rooflight.
Now, they’re channelling the same determination and focus into endurance running, proving that the skills of engineering, commitment, and discipline translate just as well on the track as in the office.
Running for Causes That Matter
For Gavin, the Great North Run is more than a physical challenge; it’s part of a personal mission. Since losing his mother in 2013, he has taken on annual charity challenges in her memory. This year, he is running for the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, which provides vital support to families across the Northeast.
“Each challenge keeps me connected to her and allows me to give something back,” said Gavin. “It’s a way to raise awareness while making a real difference for people going through difficult times.”
Harley is running in memory of his sister Chloe, who passed away at just 18 years old in December 2023. Inspired by Chloe’s passion for the ocean, he has chosen to support Surfers Against Sewage, a charity dedicated to protecting UK seas and coastlines.
“I’m running for Chloe,” said Harley. “She was full of energy, adventure, and care for the environment. Supporting a cause she believed in feels like the best way to honour her memory.”
A Culture of Giving Back
Made for Trade has a proud tradition of supporting charitable causes, from sponsored events to industry challenges. Earlier this year, Operations Director Chris Wann took part in the Handlebar Heroes cycling challenge from Land’s End to John O’Groats, one of many examples of the company’s culture of giving back.
How to Support
Both Gavin and Harley are aiming to raise meaningful funds for their chosen charities, and every donation will help them make a difference.
